Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 93m
Director: Terry Jones
Cast: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam

Synopsis:

A young man born at the same time as Christ joins an anti-Roman terrorist group, is mistaken for the messiah but arrested and crucified for his insurgent activities.

Review:

A more or less inoffensive mishmash, depending on your interpretation of blasphemy, whose serious side has a lot more to do with ridiculing terrorist groups and religious extremists than with holding Christianity up for scrutiny. There are one or two parodic moments but they are affectionate and generally weak; the real brilliance of the writing comes in the anachronistic takes on meta-historical themes such as the Pax Romana, the Latin language, haggling, prophecy and committee meetings.
