Monica (2022)
Country: US/IT
Technical: col/1.20:1 106m
Director: Andrea Pallaoro
Cast: Trace Lysette, Emily Browning, Patricia Clarkson, Joshua Close
Synopsis:
Years after leaving home to become a woman, Monica returns home to nurse her ailing mother who does not recognise her.
Review:
A moving tale of re-integration in the family unit, particularly well acted by the lead, on whom the camera foists the majority of its attention. In the independent style, the director eschews establishing shots and blocking in favour of one shot per scene, with the actors' bodies, notably their heads, spilling out of the frame; which has the presumably unintended consequence at times of focusing our gaze on the actress's curvaceous body. Scenes of emotional fireworks are absent - everyone is very caring, though not without their own problems - and there is no Terms of Endearment tearjerking climax either. Instead our attention is on Monica's chaotic lifestyle, about which we know little, but enough to appreciate how essential her repatriation is, however painful.
