Midsommar (2019)

£0.00

Country: US/SV
Technical: col/2.00:1 148m
Director: Ari Aster
Cast: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Vilhelm Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Will Poulter

Synopsis:

An American girl who has lost her family in a murder/suicide tragedy travels to Sweden with her boyfriend's mates to gather material for the thesis one of them is writing on Midsummer folklore. They are hosted by a warmly welcoming community in the land of the midnight sun, but as festivities give way to ceremonials the trip goes from magic mushrooms to nightmare.

Review:

Inevitably drawing comparisons with The Wicker Man, this uniquely atmospheric occult horror is Nordic down to its bones (The Virgin Spring, Let the Right One In, Lamb, The Northman). Overstretched perhaps, it drops hints of baleful things to come by dint of its hyper-controlled camera and soundscape. Pugh is exceptional in conveying the kind of disorientation and isolation needed for a character who has lost everything and is a prime candidate to gain from a rigidly governed lifestyle; the other (boys) are predictable no-hopers displaying all the vices of the modern world. The sunny weather conditions and expressionistic set design are perfect foils for a chilling tale of sustained living.
