A girl is sold by her father to a geisha house and thanks to a chance meeting acquires sufficient fortitude to gain pre-eminence. But will love forever be denied her?
Review:
One of those Hollywood fairytales - and a very good looking one at that - where the turns of the plot arrive with McKee-like precision: our hapless heroine is forever getting herself into hot water, making enemies, etc., and yet on the other hand is blessed with singularly kindly benefactors. One might argue that both have the same root cause: her uncommonly striking features and autonomous disposition which draw attention to her. Well, one cannot fault the poise and taste with which this piece of tinseltown high art is translated to the screen, using authentically Japanese cast members, albeit speaking accented English, and backed by Williams music from the bows of Perlman and Bell. In the end, though, it is all perhaps just too ravishingly beautiful to convince.
