Madeleine (1950)
Country: GB
Technical: bw 114m
Director: David Lean
Cast: Ann Todd, Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Sellars, Ivan Desny, Norman Wooland
Synopsis:
Madeleine confounds her parents by evading an offer of marriage from an eligible bachelor. Little do they suspect that she has been seeing a charming Frenchman for some time.
Review:
Based on the real-life case of a mid-nineteenth century Glasgow woman, Lean's film of her dramatic story was a wedding present to his actress-wife, but he was never very happy with it. It is true that the results are workmanlike but fail to come alive, nor even repressively simmer as in Brief Encounter.
