Les marmottes (1993)
Country: FR
Technical: col 104m
Director: Elie Chouraqui
Cast: Jean-Hugues Anglade, Jacqueline Bisset, Christine Boisson, André Dussollier, Gérard Lanvin, Marie Trintignant, Anouk Aimée, Daniel Gélin, Virginie Ledoyen, Christopher Thompson
Synopsis:
As family members gather for the annual réveillon at the grandfather's residence in Chamonix, the three sons see their relationships reaching crisis point, and the atmosphere is as depressive as the snowy front that hovers over the resort.
Review:
One of those social gathering movies, like The Big Chill and Peter's Friends, in which we follow several stories at once and are gifted with an insight into love's turmoil and the seething cauldron that a family reunion can be. As this is a gallic version, there is plenty of shouting and emoting, some hopping in and out of bed, and a handheld camera that careers after the protagonists as they move in and out of hotel rooms and each other's residences. Far too much inaudible dialogue, but well written by Danièle Thompson and Chouraqui, and with a cast like this there is always something of interest to watch. It adds up to something quite profound and all-embracing about relationships, and the shots around Chamonix are terrific.
