Sillitoe's screenplay makes great material for the new British cinema: a locale hitherto withheld from cinematic treatment, contemporary attitudes of rebellion and disrespect for authority. Courtenay is the great discovery here, of course, but Redgrave is also terrific as the governor with the best intentions.
