Overshadowed by John Wayne's handsome super-production five years later, this humbler Republic western follows roughly the same trajectory, with more attention given to the politics of caution favoured by Bowie, due to his relation by marriage to the Generalisimo. Davy Crockett (Hunnicutt) is cast as a lighter figure, but the production achieves some impact nevertheless.
