The Lunchbox (2013)

Country: IND/FR/GER/US/CAN
Technical: col/2.35:1 104m
Director: Ritesh Batra
Cast: Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Synopsis:

In the busy city of Mumbai, the lunchtime office delivery service makes a mistake, and a tentative correspondence develops between an about-to-retire widower and his provider, an unhappily married younger woman.

Review:

This gem of a picture may reside on the dubious assumption that the delivery service would repeat the same error day after day, but no matter; in the process it permits a heart-warming reminder that a pair of lost souls can reach out to each other across the myriad social interactions of a teeming metropolis. At the same time it is sustained by a 'magic-realist' culinary treat for the hero/viewer, and a secondary character who also helps him out of his self-protective shell. With just enough exquisitely Indian flourishes to satisfy an international audience's hunger for the exotic, the film was a significant arthouse success but will, one suspects, endure beyond such superficial elements, a badge of hope for all who would give up on life.
