The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

£0.00

Country: NZ/US/GER
Technical: DeLuxe/Super 35 201/251/263m
Director: Peter Jackson
Cast: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, John Noble, Ian Holm

Synopsis:

Frodo battles on into Mordor with the deceitful Golom and the untrusting Sam, while Aragorn, Gandalf et al. ride to Gondor to defend it valiantly against the oncoming Orc horde.

Review:

A worthy conclusion to the saga, planned and shot as one film, with a fantastically designed and realized Gondor taking centre stage. There are perhaps too many pregnant looks for those unfamiliar with the books, and neither of the 'sequels' achieves the non-stop excitement of the first film. However, all three films were given an overhaul by Jackson subsequently, altering their shape and pacing; the result, getting on for twelve hours, demands consideration as one work, and is undoubtedly the most ambitious undertaking of the art form yet undertaken, at least in commercial and logistical terms.
