The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/scope 119m
Director: Wes Anderson
Cast: Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Gambon

Synopsis:

A Cousteau-like explorer-filmmaker sets out to hunt down the shark that killed his best friend, accompanied by his newfound natural son and a posh reporter.

Review:

Extraordinary hodgepodge of ingredients, from animated marine life to David Bowie songs in a variety of languages. The director is clearly affectionate towards his subject, played with cantankerous eccentricity by the star, and there are ambitious bits of production design and mise en scene based around the ship Belafonte and a subplot involving pirates. However, the film outstays its welcome and does not really add much to what the director's earlier work had to say (dysfunctional characters, redemption from past mistakes).
