The Libertine (2004)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 114m
Director: Laurence Dunmore
Cast: Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton, John Malkovich, Paul Ritter, Francesca Annis, Rosamund Pike, Tom Hollander, Johnny Vegas

Synopsis:

After the Restoration the second Lord Rochester falls for an actress, puts on a scabrous play and drinks and fornicates his way to an early grave.

Review:

An antidote to Stage Beauty's amusing hi-jinks, this excoriating exposé of the immorality of Restoration London is filmed in bleached, grainy colour due to the director's eschewing of additional lights apart from candles and lanterns and sunlit rooms. The Nyman score is lush enough, as is Depp's performance, but Morton is an unconvincing object of his passion and the episodic nature of the scenario will be bewildering to some. However, if you can take the almost tangibly sweaty atmosphere and downward spiral narrative, there are some choice scenes of Depp doing what he does best, being charmingly shocking.
