The Last King of Scotland (2006)

£0.00

Country: GB/GER/US
Technical: DeLuxe/scope 123m
Director: Kevin Macdonald
Cast: Forest Whitaker, James McAvoy, Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, Simon McBurney

Synopsis:

A newly qualified doctor escapes his stuffy Scottish origins by embarking on a voyage of self-discovery - and self-indulgence - abroad. He arrives in Uganda to work for an expat-run clinic there and almost immediately finds himself compromised by an acquaintance with the brand new dictator, Idi Amin. Before long the lack of clarity in his humanitarian principles leads him to fatal errors of judgement.

Review:

Aside from its insufferably naïve and irresponsible protagonist, whose only act of heroism is the mercy killing of a stricken cow, this is a gripping colonial thriller in the manner of The Constant Gardener, towered over by Whitaker's performance as Amin. Macdonald's ciné-verité direction does not miss a detail.
