The Last Days of Disco (1998)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 113m
Director: Whit Stillman
Cast: Chloe Sevigny, Kate Beckinsale, Chris Eigeman

Synopsis:

It is the early 80s and discoland is losing its chic and innocence, giving way to a seedy playground. Against this background we shadow a few months in the lives of an assorted group of New Yorkers, centred on a particular nightclub.

Review:

Stillman goes out of his way to present us with some pretty unsympathetic characters: this is no nostalgia piece, pure and simple. As in his previous films his characters spend a lot of screen time engaging in pseudo-intellectual and polemical chat, one discussion focusing hilariously on "Lady and the Tramp". They seem oddly out of their depth in this decaying clubland, and the one likeable character contracts herpes as a result of a one-night stand.
