The Ladykillers (2004)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 104m
Director: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Cast: Tom Hanks, Irma P. Hall, J.K.Simmons, Marlon Wayans

Synopsis:

An educated southern gentleman gathers a crew of four no-hopers for a caper whose aim is to steal a casino's takings by tunnelling from a feisty widow's root cellar.

Review:

For this apparently pointless exercise the brothers put together a package of their characteristic southern gothic elements (cf. Blood Simple, O Brother...), including a learnedly verbose Hanks and his profane melting pot of losers whose antics make up much of the comedy. The convenience of a timely garbage barge is a poor replacement for a goods train leaving the shunting yard in the Ealing version, but the transplantation is witty, right down to the off-kilter choice of instruments for the quintet, and the execution brims with the customary cinematic flair. One just wishes they'd turn their attention away from pastiche and produce another Fargo.
