The Lady in the Van (2015)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 104m
Director: Nicholas Hytner
Cast: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, Roger Allam, Jim Broadbent, Frances de la Tour

Synopsis:

A playwright living in Camden Town finds himself the reluctant acquaintance, and host, of a batty old pensioner who has been involved in a hit-and-run accident and is living out of her van.

Review:

This new addition to Bennett's slanted vision of suburban Britain has his characteristic dose of compassionate misanthropy, while reining in some of his more mannered excesses. This by virtue of a scenario that centres around the classic Maggie Smith portrait of brusque eccentricity, and the pleasant device of splitting the narrator into two: actor and writer. Jennings is the real star of the film here ('Caring is about shit.'), assaying an impersonation which never loses sight of the humanity behind the mask. Hytner takes us through twenty years of British social history, meanwhile, allowing us to smile quaintly at the idea of a semi-detached in Camden going for £13.5.
