Lore (2012)

£0.00

Country: GER/AUS/GB
Technical: col 109m
Director: Cate Shortland
Cast: Saskia Rosendahl, Nele Trebs, Kai Malina

Synopsis:

In the days following the downfall of the Nazi regime, an SS officer and his wife abandon their children, leaving them to trek across country and across Allied sectors from the Black Forest to Hamburg. In charge of a one year-old baby and with nothing but her wits, a few trinkets and a liberated Jewish extermination camp survivor to get them through, the eldest daughter struggles with her sense of loss, the effects of her twisted education and her burgeoning sexuality.

Review:

Shot throughout with a handheld camera, and much of the time in tight close-up, this is nothing if not an exemplar of the new feminist aesthetic (cf. Jane Campion, Andrea Arnold). It is uncannily effective in conjuring the sense of moral chaos and disorientation that must have accompanied the German débâcle, and the performance of the lead actress is exceptional, but it is a long haul, and the uniformity of tone takes its own toll on the viewer.
