Lone Star (1996)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 135m
Director: John Sayles
Cast: Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Peña, Joe Morton, Kris Kristofferson, Matthew McConaughey

Synopsis:

A border country sheriff investigates a skeleton found on a military rifle range in the Texan desert, and starts to ask questions about a corrupt former sheriff's legendary conflict with his own father and unorthodox predecessor. At the same time, barely buried personal dramas simmer to the surface, not least affecting the families of his high school sweetheart and a newly arrived black army colonel, whose father was also present one fateful night in 1957.

Review:

Like The Chase before it, though much less hysterically, Sayles's film unpicks racial sensibilities, past injustices, vested interest and the vicissitudes of being a lawman in the American south. He skilfully interweaves three separate stories spanning fifty years, each of which affects our lead character in one way or another. Flashbacks are integrated into present action as if on a stage, panning right or left, and the level of detail in the writing is worthy of the opening scene's key line: 'You've gotta take an interest if you settle down in a place.' One of the key American films of the 90s.
