Lola (1961)

Country: FR/IT
Technical: bw/scope 91m
Director: Jacques Demy
Cast: Anouk Aimée, Jacques Harden, Marc Michel

Synopsis:

A prostitute in a sea port finds true love.

Review:

The director's typical form of 'mélodrame à coïncidences' is tempered here by a raw, Nouvelle Vague shooting style. It is quite poetically and economically done and the realism of the acting helps cover up the essential artifice. Even the slow movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, mercifully not arranged by Michel Legrand, works used in an almost Godardian off-the-wall way.
