Lizzie (2018)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 105m
Director: Craig William Macneill
Cast: Chloë Sevigny, Kristen Stewart, Jamey Sheridan, Fiona Shaw, Denis O'Hare

Synopsis:

1892: the daughter of a successful New England businessman, Lizzie Borden chafes against his iron rule over the household, which consists of her spinster sister, stepmother and legacy-hunting uncle. When a new maidservant arrives, Lizzie finds in her both a pillar of support and a fellow sufferer of abuse, but their alliance sets them on a perilous course.

Review:

Greyish hued, clenched, forensic reconstruction of an infamous murder case, with the focus very much on Lizzie as victim: epileptic, withheld from society and made to feel even her future financial security is in jeopardy. Producer-actress Sevigny is superb here at garnering empathy for an acknowledged murderess, but Stewart is equally skilful at adumbrating the many faces of the scarcely expressive, barely literate Bridget: compassion, misery and attraction, yes, but also a pragmatic distancing of herself for both their sakes.
