£0.00

Country: GB/AUS/US
Technical: col/2.39:1 118m
Director: Garth Davis
Cast: Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman, David Wenham

Synopsis:

Separated from his mother and siblings in western India after taking shelter in a railway carriage, a boy is picked off the streets of Calcutta and given up for adoption to a Tasmanian couple. Years later, he is powerless to resist the call of his bereaved mother and determines to find where he came from, at the risk of alienating those closest to him.

Review:

Affecting drama, based on a true story. The first half, depicting the young Saroo's adventure, is perhaps more satisfying than the obsessive emoting of his older self, a thankless role for Patel. The use of aerial shots to prefigure and mimic the hero's search through satellite images on Google Earth is an effective stylistic device, and the film parlays its despondent mood for a generally optimistic view of human nature which struck a chord with audiences.
