Like Water for Chocolate (1992)

(Como agua para chocolate)

Country: MEX
Technical: col 114m
Director: Alfonso Arau
Cast: Marco Leonardi, Lumi Cavazos

Synopsis:

The saga of a landowning family in Mexico during the first decades of the twentieth century: as the country struggles to shake off the yoke of its right-wing past, a daughter denied the privilege of marriage, because she must look after her mother as the youngest child, is blessed with the power to transform food into a conduit for her emotions.

Review:

This somewhat prettified adaptation of a significant novel by Laura Esquivel suffers from the customary loss of intensity produced by a constantly ranging narrative, but is at least unified by its protagonist's tribulations and her love for Pedro, who, one guesses, must symbolise freedom in the rough schema suggested above. Cinematography and music are sorely dated, but the food still looks good, and the film's lurches into the supernatural never cease to catch one off guard.
