Synopsis:
In the south of France a shambling film director joins forces with a former student turned hotel receptionist to make a documentary about a female politician and author due to visit her sister at the family home, one which the student has known as a boy by virtue of its Maghreb maid being his mother.
Review:
The affectionate portraits of human foibles that have become the staple of this particular partnership continue in this amiable comedy of manners. One is reminded of Woody Allen at times, only without a strong dramatic thread, and the same goes for Rohmer whose narratives are always dominant. This can lead to some want of direction at times but if you let yourself be carried along and sit back and enjoy the performances and dialogue there is much to appreciate. Music is cleverly used to point the mood, and there are scenes that are truly touching, though one feels the putative affair with the waitress is contrived and the closing scenes sew up rather two many loose ends.
