Last Night (1998)

£0.00

Country: CAN/FR
Technical: col 95m
Director: Don McKellar
Cast: Don McKellar, Sandra Oh, Sarah Polley, David Cronenberg, Geneviève Bujold

Synopsis:

With the world about to end at midnight, the lives of former Toronto school friends and a woman trying reach her husband across town intersect.

Review:

This low-key (given its shattering premise) millennial drama for the most part follows its fragmented, understated path, as the various characters concerned are sketched in: a bereaved architectural worker just wants to be alone; another ticks off his list of sexual to-dos; gasboard employees tidily complete their duties. There are oddities, like the woman who is seen jogging in what looks like a flying helmet, and the primary school teacher prepared to sleep with her former pupil. Meanwhile, we wonder why, with the advancing hours producing no reduction in the swelteringly sunny conditions, it is so important that the gas remains functional to the end. But, as the countdown draws to its close, the film achieves a poignancy that eludes many a more spectacular cinematic apocalypse by dint of nothing but great acting and a frame whiteout.
