Lara Croft Tomb Raider (2001)

£0.00

Country: US/GER/GB/JAP
Technical: DeLuxe/Super 35 100m
Director: Simon West
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight, Noah Taylor, Iain Glen, Daniel Craig, Julian Rhind-Tutt

Synopsis:

The heiress of an eminent - and extremely wealthy - archaeologist struggles to gain possession of the fragments of a certain Triangle of Light before the nine planets complete a once-in-five-thousand-year alignment, and before a secret society, known as the Illuminati, can beat her to it for its own nefarious ends.

Review:

Indiana Jones action heroics based on the computer game, and therefore with a lot less archaeology and a lot more fantasy. In two important respects it differs, however: the hero is a woman, and a sexless one at that, for all her pneumatism; and there is absolutely no suspense because she is never not in control of a situation. The cynic would say that, far less than intending empowerment, this is merely a way for Hollywood to beat up its heroine while reassuring the viewer that she is not in danger. (In other words quite the opposite of the game, in which she died and was resurrected, but exactly the same end result.)
