Country: ICE/SV/POL
Technical: col/2.39:1 106m
Director: Valdimar Jóhannsson
Cast: Noomi Rapace, Hilmir Snær Gudnason, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson

Synopsis:

A sheep farmer and his wife, who have lost children previously, are delivering their new season's lambs when they find what seems a gift from God, a hybrid creature which they raise as their own.

Review:

A grim fairytale indeed, this uniquely unsettling film addresses the ruthlessness behind the most idyllic family unit. Remoteness permits this impossible love, and the advent of the brother means that it is challenged only momentarily, although he brings with him the stirrings of past transgressions. The perpetual daylight and implacable landscape, together with the almost musique concrète soundtrack, mean that the entire film is spent in the shadow of some bestial immanence, the knowledge that something dreadful will happen. Even so, you will never guess what it is. A Christian reading evokes all kinds of resonances but one nagging absence remains: what happened to the ninety-nine sheep, now that the one has been found?
