The flaw in this device is that though we see and hear like him we cannot share his thoughts, which lends his cynical lines a harshness unmediated by a facial expression or inner reflection: his co-stars' reactions must do all the work. However, there are compensations, not least, for male viewers, that of being made love to by Audrey Totter.
