The Killing of Sister George (1968)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 138m
Director: Robert Aldrich
Cast: Beryl Reid, Susannah York, Coral Browne

Synopsis:

An ageing lesbian actress, star of a popular television soap, finds herself written out as her character is killed off. Meanwhile life imitates art as her paramour is poached from under her nose by a society lady.

Review:

Aldrich was the wrong director for this excoriating piece of satire which demanded a lighter touch. Reid's wonderfully frumpish, alternately bitchy and touching character survives just about, but there are some hideous directorial underlinings and the length is killing in itself. (For the famously excised seduction scene between Browne and York, Aldrich famously had ice placed on the younger actress's nipples to keep them erect.)
