Perhaps taking its cue from Laure Berthaud in the French series, Engrenages (Spiral), this hugely successful Danish series cemented international interest in so-called Nordic noir, after the Swedish hit, Wallander. The first series described above was 20 episodes long (1,000 minutes), each one covering the events of a single day in the investigation: too long to expect some audiences to stay hooked to a relatively slow-moving and uneventful narrative. However, Gråbøl is impressive as the emotionally distant Sarah Lund, and the atmosphere and performances are consistent in support.
