The Keeper (2018)

£0.00

Country: GB/GER
Technical: col/2.39:1 120m
Director: Marcus H. Rosenmüller
Cast: David Kross, Freya Mavor, John Henshaw, Harry Melling

Synopsis:

A German POW in Lancashire is got off work detail by a wholesaler who wants him to keep goal for his local team. Acceptance is hard won from the family, other team members and fans, but the daughter is not blind to his special qualities, as might also be said of the Man City manager who sees him play.

Review:

Based on the true story of Bert Trautmann, this uplifting drama does not shy away from the less comfortable aspects of its story: the shared trauma of the war, the hostility towards the Germans after years of anti-Nazi propaganda, the lasting effects of personal tragedy (although these are muted by omission - the couple did in fact divorce). For the most part, though, this is about the shared values of rapprochement, good humour and football.
