(Kirikou and the Sorceress)

Country: FR/BEL/LUX
Technical: col/1.66:1 74m
Director: Michel Ocelot
Cast: animated

Synopsis:

A child is born in an African village at the mercy of a malicious sorceress. His precocity, bravery and wisdom together permit him not only to discover the truth behind the curse but to resolve it in the most unexpected of ways.

Review:

A delightful exception to the rule in children's animation: the colours are ravishingly non-primary, the drawing striking in its beauty and ethnic precision (and frankness, wtih plenty of breasts on display); the storytelling is pacy and yet thoughtful, with themes of intellectual enquiry and violence suffered by women underlying the narrative. A minor classic.
