King Kong (2005)

£0.00

Country: NZ/US/GER
Technical: col/Super 35 187m
Director: Peter Jackson
Cast: Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, Jack Black, Thomas Kretschmann, Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis

Synopsis:

The story as in the Cooper/Schoedsack classic, only this time with far more time spent setting up the premise and characters, and a fuller assortment of perils on the island itself.

Review:

A demonstration of what modern visual effects can do, this film was at no point filmed in New York City, believe it or not. Everything was visualized in the studio in New Zealand and on computers. For this viewer it really doesn't show and the resulting film is a completely immersive experience, albeit one with clear nods in the direction of the theme park audience, so to speak. The leads (Watts and Serkis, playing Kong, that is) really manage to bring out the pathos in the story, and Jackson certainly brings off the drama and spectacle with panache and, for the most part, good taste, though with a tendency shown in the Lord of the Rings to leave no stone unturned.
