Killing Eve (2018-22)

£0.00

Country: US/GB
Technical: col/16:9 TV Series (4 seasons of 8 episodes) 42m
Director: Luke Jennings (novels), Phoebe Waller-Bridge, others (sw)
Cast: Jodie Comer, Sandra Oh, Fiona Shaw, Kim Bodnia

Synopsis:

A security officer working for MI6 becomes fascinated by the figure of Villanelle, an assassin who may or may not be working for The Twelve, an international organisation with roots in the former Soviet Union. It is an obsession which brings both of them into conflict with their professional and private selves.

Review:

Whether or not the books were inspired by Besson's Nikita, there is more than a whiff of that story here, but the tone is different. Waller-Bridge offers us a jokey trip through misanthropic violence and cynical officialdom, while cutting the thriller vibe with a voguish, will-they-won't-they lesbian romance. If it were just about the first season then this would probably get 3 stars, but the producers got greedy, Waller-Bridge had moved on, and the other writers contented themselves with revisiting old beats while upping the ante in the detail. In brief, it's all dressed up with nowhere to go.
