Killer Joe (2011)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 102m
Director: William Friedkin
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, Thomas Haden Church

Synopsis:

In hock to the Mob, desperate Chris, with the connivance of his dysfunctional family, hires a corrupt cop to 'off' his mother in order to collect on an insurance policy. In lieu of advance payment the cop demands the virginity of the sister as a retainer.

Review:

Friedkin's film of Tracy Letts's trailer trash melodrama is both a return to form and an evocation of everything from a Coen brothers caper-gone-wrong to a piece of Donald Cammell weirdness. McConaughey delivers a compellingly crazed performance, and Haden Church also commits fine work. From the opening muff shot, the film tries so hard to shock that it is hard to care for any of the characters, including Temple's incipiently psycho nymphet. On the other hand, it has a deranged kind of intensity other films can only strive for.
