K-PAX (2001)

£0.00

Country: US/GER
Technical: Technicolor/Panavision 121m
Director: Iain Softley
Cast: Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Alfre Woodard, Mary McCormack

Synopsis:

A man claiming to be from a planet 1000 light years distant finds himself in the Manhattan Psychiatric Institute, where the doctor struggles to keep him in his charge in spite of his untoward influence on the other patients in his ward. At the same time he seeks to crack the mystery of his obvious self-delusion.

Review:

Initially coming across as a Starman/Brother from Another Planet light comedy, with the audience encouraged to root for the truth of the K-PAX theory, the film appears to have a change of heart halfway through and becomes a One Flew Over.../'He is mad after all' sentimental drama. The sophistication of the main character's 'delusion', however, leaves some questions unanswered and the film lacks the objectivity to be a Picnic at Hanging Rock-style unresolved conundrum. It just ends up having a split personality. Spacey's performance, though, is never less than pleasing and it is all watchably entertaining until the hypnosis stuff begins.
