The Josephine Baker Story (1991)
Country: US/GB
Technical: col/1.33:1 130m
Director: Brian Gibson
Cast: Lynn Whitfield, Rubén Blades, Louis Gossett Jr., David Dukes
Synopsis:
A black girl born into poverty in St. Louis gravitates from vaudeville chorus line to centre of attention for her eye-catching antics on stage, achieving international fame in Paris for her exotic 'jungle dance'. But recognition came in many forms, and alternated with rejection in certain quarters.
Review:
Part produced by HBO and Anglia Television, this engaging biopic no doubt broke the record for the quantity of nudity in a TV production - all in the interests of realism, naturally. Whitfield's is a spellbinding performance, but she does not really look much like Baker.
