Juan de los muertos (2011)

£0.00

Country: SP/CUB
Technical: col 92m
Director: Alejandro Brugués
Cast: Alexis Díaz de Villegas, Jorge Molina, Andrea Duro

Synopsis:

A closely-knit group of deadbeats and petty criminals make capital out of a zombie epidemic when it strikes Havana, the government accounting for it as a sneak attack from the US.

Review:

Satisfying overseas variation on Shaun of the Dead, with the same buddy set-up and an estranged daughter replacing the girlfriend situation. In other respects it is more freewheeling with regards to narrative and directs its satiric flourishes more widely (communist Cuban history, the dire living conditions of its people, the extent of their venality, etc.), meanwhile paying homage to other movies as unrelated as Enter the Dragon. Fittingly enough Juan's weapon of choice is a paddle! (Shaun's was a cricket bat.)
