Johnny English (2003)
Country: GB/FR/US
Technical: col 88m
Director: Peter Howitt
Cast: Rowan Atkinson, John Malkovich, Natalie Imbruglia, Tim Pigott-Smith
Synopsis:
A British Secret Service functionary is unexpectedly promoted to active duty when all the agents are wiped out due to his negligence, and must protect Her Majesty's realm from the despotic ambitions of a French pretender to the throne.
Review:
Atkinson blends his Blackadder and Bean personae in a manner not too coherent in this energetic Bond spoof. Almost as if only too aware of the tiredness of its premise, the film throws all manner of jokes at its audience, good, bad or indifferent, and leaves holes in the preposterous plot to gape with shameless abandon. Surprisingly, given the rather lame results early on, it whips along at sufficient pace and with all the gusto of Malkovich's absurd French accent until it succeeds in having one surrender to its sheer lack of restraint.
