John Wick (2014)

£0.00

Country: US/CHI
Technical: col/2.35:1 101m
Director: Chad Stahelski, David Leitch
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Willem Dafoe, John Leguizamo

Synopsis:

Retired assassin loses his beloved wife, who bequeathes a Beagle pup to help him adjust. All fine, until Russian mafia punks take a shine to his Mustang, and kill his dog.

Review:

This utterly slick and violent vehicle for its star's particular brand of loping woodenness is not only better crafted than 47 Ronin, for example, but also better suited to his gifts. He acquits himself impeccably in the numerous one-on-ones, like a tall version of Tom Cruise's Vincent in Collateral, while Nyqvist presents a superb cameo of sartorial villainy. Subtitled Russian dialogue also makes for a welcome change of pace, and the Continental Hotel for assassins is a nice touch. In the end, though, its makers have skewered themselves on their many generic borrowings, from Guy Ritchie to Smokin' Aces.
