Joan of Arc (1948)
Country: US
Technical: col 145m
Director: Victor Fleming
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, José Ferrer, George Coulouris
Synopsis:
A farm girl's faith inspires a defeated nation to rise up against her English oppressors, but she is a political pawn that the weak Dauphin sacrifices when he loses his nerve.
Review:
Rather tedious and verbose colour treatment, even if Bergman's face is a thing of sublimely photographed beauty. Ironically, in view of her sanctification here, this was one of the last things she did before being disgraced in Hollywood by her conduct with Roberto Rossellini. The same, or indeed Tinseltown's eternal hypocrisy, might even be read into her eroticization as the criss-crossed chains tighten around her bosom during her execution.
