Jefferson in Paris (1995)
Country: US
Technical: col 139m
Director: James Ivory
Cast: Nick Nolte, Greta Scacchi, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Thandie Newton
Synopsis:
As ambassador to the court of Louis XVI, Thomas Jefferson has a privileged vantage point on the French Revolution, and dominion over his household, which includes a pretty 15 year-old negro slave girl.
Review:
The kind of scurrilous historical speculation which preoccupied the Merchant-Ivory team at times (Surviving Picasso, The White Countess): well enough done in itself, but never really taking off as drama, and suffering from the mannered and anachronistic playing of its lead.
