Jar City (2006)

£0.00

Country: ICE/GER/DK
Technical: col/Super 35 95m
Director: Baltasar Kormákur
Cast: Ingvar E. Sigurdsson, Agústa Eva Erlendsdóttir

Synopsis:

An apparently motiveless murder has at its roots the unfortunate transmission of a genetic brain disorder called neurofibromatosis, effectively closing a circle between victim and perpetrator. A jaundiced police officer with his own problems in the shape of a pregnant junky daughter is in charge of putting together the pieces of this unlikely puzzle.

Review:

A chilly depiction of low life in Iceland, offering the incidental details of depressed habitations and sheep's head confit. The camerawork is strikingly good, using aerial shots to good effect, and does not shy from getting up close to grisly detail. The performances are first rate and there is a vein of dark humour which nevertheless takes nothing from the deadly seriousness of the intrigue, solving as it does more than one local mystery.
