Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)
Country: US/RUS
Technical: col/2.35:1 105m
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Cast: Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Kenneth Branagh
Synopsis:
LSE graduate Jack Ryan is hired by a counter-terrorist unit of the CIA as a covert analyst with a Wall St company. Before long he has detected a Russian plutocrat’s plot to destabilise the dollar by artificially propping it up prior to a terrorist attack on Manhattan. However, his newfound field operative status sits uneasily with his love life.
Review:
Curiously old-fashioned addition to the Jack Ryan chronicles, with a post-9/11 scenario but a very naïve view of security prudence while operating in the former USSR. Having broken his back in the opening reel, our hero proceeds to throw himself about like Ethan Hunt while shouting ‘Cathy!’ to remind us he is simply ‘suit next door’ Jack Ryan. Plus side, it moves fast (though not fast enough to spot the inconsistencies) and Branagh provides another slice of Soviet ham as the villain.
