Based on Asimov's book, Proyas's film is situated somewhere between the visionary design spectacle of Dark City and a star vehicle for Will Smith, who is given rather too many opportunities to appear smart. Nevertheless, Moynahan is a suitably sober foil and the robot anthropomorphism and effects work are fine window dressing for an efficient generic A-I conspiracy scenario.
