Insomnia (2002)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe 118m
Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Hilary Swank, Martin Donovan

Synopsis:

An L.A. detective with an I.A. investigation hanging over his head is sent to Alaska to help the local force investigate the murder of a mature schoolgirl. He becomes estranged from his partner, whom he then accidentally shoots, morally compromising himself in the process by blaming their suspect and placing himself at the latter's disposal for manipulation, a task greatly aided by the fact that he finds it impossible to sleep in the perpetual daylight of the northern summer latitudes.

Review:

Unnecessary (needless to say) remake of a perfectly effective Norwegian film but better than most. Pacino delivers a characteristically febrile performance as a man on the edge of losing his sanity and his soul and is supported by the impressive Swank and an unusually understated Williams. Moreover, Nolan's nervy but unmelodramatic direction does due homage to the source material and sustains concentration and momentum to the end.
