Independence Day (1996)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/Panavision 145m
Director: Roland Emmerich
Cast: Bill Pullman, Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell

Synopsis:

Vast alien spaceships assemble above key terrestrial cities and destroy them; a Jewish scientist, black pilot and WASP US President together face and defeat the foul-smelling peril.

Review:

The canniest opening of a blockbuster picture since Gone with the Wind, timed for 4th July, 1996. In their magnanimous way the makers extend this declaration of independence to the entire planet, but this remains very much a US-bound affair (the odd montage-reduced digression to foreign parts aside). It's the kind of morale-boosting hokum Hollywood feels duty-bound to turn out every so often, with variable success (Pearl Harbor, Top Gun), and delivers the requisite blend of thrills, mayhem and quivers of national pride together with ante-upping special effects and a charismatic Will Smith. Despite the simplistic science and ludicrous Trojan Horse finale, not to mention a none too original scenario, it struck gold, proving one of the highest grossing films of all time.
