L.P. Hartley's novel probes the still prevalent class divide after World War One, against a backdrop of nervous breakdown and readjustment. Bridges delivers a delicately nuanced portrait of a milieu he would make his own, Shaw particularly memorable in his role as caged lion. The French of course loved it: it shared the Palme d'Or with Scarecrow that year.
