The Hi-Lo Country (1998)
Country: US/GB
Technical: col/scope 114m
Director: Stephen Frears
Cast: Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Cole Hauser
Synopsis:
New-Mexican cowboys after the Second World War resist the commercial mass production of beef and both fall in love with the wife of a local ranch employee who hasn't.
Review:
A mood piece with the occasional brawl which leaves a nasty taste in the mouth: these tragic heroes of the modern West do not endear themselves easily (cf. Lonely Are the Brave), though the makers' sympathies are clearly with them. The promised catharsis never comes and it is a long wait.
