The Hanging Tree (1959)
Country: US
Technical: col 106m
Director: Delmer Daves
Cast: Gary Cooper, Maria Schell, Karl Malden
Synopsis:
A doctor saves a man from hanging, but then tries to control his life subsequently.
Review:
Genuine American gothic, in the tradition of Johnny Guitar, with all the melodramatic villains and a decidedly ambiguous hero; there is even the incongruously homely theme song. Coop shows real maturity as an actor in a far from simple role, Maria Schell is remarkably good, and Daves holds it all together with the best old-time professional slickness. (The score by Max Steiner shows that another old pro has far from lost his touch.) Enormous fun.
