Hive (2021)
Country: KOS/SW/ALB/MAC
Technical: col/1.66:1 84m
Director: Blerta Basholli
Cast: Yllka Gashi, Çun Lajçi, Aurita Agushi
Synopsis:
Seven years after the Kosovan war with Serbia and villagers are still seeking closure after the mass killings that took away many of the young menfolk. Fahrije, responsible for her father-in-law and two children, determines to get a driving licence and sell her preserves at the local supermarket. Opposition comes from the older men and from within her own family.
Review:
Based on a true story, this sobering film begins with its heroine checking body bags and ends on triumphant shots of the real Fahrije with her successful business. The symbolism of the hive, with its worker bees ministering to their queen, is well taken in inverted form, and the male attitudes on display frankly beggar belief. Storytelling follows the deliberate dynamic of the 'intimiste' school (handheld camera, minimal dialogue) and hinges on the growing solidarity between the women and reframing of the domestic mindset.
